I can't believe it's been over 2 months since I started working on my Star Surround Quilt along quilt! Obviously the quilt along is over now so I didn't get a chance to win any prizes, but I still need to finish the quilt. After the fabric cutting, it was time to sew some Half Square Triangles (HST's). First I grouped the cut blocks as instructed, sewed two diagonal lines and trimmed to turn each sewn block into two Half Square Triangle blocks. Then I pressed them open.

Back in July I made a weighted blanket for my nephew Ethan and afterwards, a friend asked if I could make one for her son too. So we picked out some fun fabric from the movie "Cars" and made one for Blake & Logan. They're a little smaller than my nephew so both the blanket size and weight were smaller than the one I made for my nephew. Click here to see the tutorial on how to make one. I also had some leftover fleece so I made a matching travel pillow too! Etsy listings coming soon!
Recently our youngest nephew Greyson had his 1st birthday, yay! I've gotten in this tradition where for all the nieces and nephews they get a baby blanket or quilt for their first birthday and then a twin sized quilt for their big-kid bed when they turn two. This year was a little overwhelming since I had two "big kid" quilts, my nephew's 1st bday quilt and my mom's 50th bday quilt but so far I'm getting them all done on time (go me!).
Most of the closets in our house have wood slat style bi-fold doors. And I HATE them. I don't mind the way they look but the thing that drives me nuts is that they constantly come off the tracks or get stuck or some other thing that causes them to need to be adjusted. I swear you can only open those doors about 3 tmes before you need to readjust them. Super annoying. So as part of the guest room re-do it was time to get rid of the non-functioning bi-fold doors.
As part of redecorating the guest bedroom, I decided I wanted to make a quilt to go on the bed. Previously there was a really heavy duvet with a gold and purple cover. It was pretty but it was WAY to hot for Florida - even in the winter that comforter is more than you need. Plus the fabrics were too heavy for that room, it felt like it really weighed the room down. I started doing some pinterest and internet searching for inspiration and I saw this pillow and really liked it!
I was going to buy some cute European style Roman Shades online for the guest room but when I was walking around Joann Fabrics waiting to get the headboard fabric cut, I saw the cutest purple and green fabric and knew I wanted to try and make the shades myself!
When I first started quilting, I wasn’t really concerned about scraps of fabric. Unless it was a big piece (maybe close to a fat quarter) then I didn’t save the leftover fabric – I just threw it out. ***GASP!!!*** I know all you experienced quilters and fabric hoarders are having a hard time believing it, but it is true. I used to be a fabric waster. I admit it. Since then, I have gradually started saving smaller and smaller pieces with hopes of one day making a scrappy quilt out of them. However, I draw the line at about a 3” square. If it’s smaller than that, I still usually toss it – I know I’ll never have the patience to do a postage stamp quilt so it’s pretty pointless to keep. But I still feel bad just throwing them away! So I decided to come up with a few ideas for the little scraps that I know I won’t sew into anything.
As most of you know, I am on the advisory board for the chapter of Alpha Phi at Florida Tech. One of the girls who I advise is in charge of the new member education and experience and she approached me over the summer about an idea she had. She wanted to give all the girls journals so that they could make notes or even use it like a diary. Well it just so happened that I had just made a Journal Cover for myself so of course I volunteered to make some for the new girls – all 15 of them!
Earlier this year I made a cute "under the sea" themed baby blanket and burp cloths for our good friends Carolyn & Josh and their daughter Makayla. Recently, Carolyn mentioned that she'd like to have a small zippered bag for toys and books to take to and from daycare/babysitter and she'd love to have one that matched her stuff. So of course I was happy to make her one :)
