I don't make very many bags that are square and zippered so it was nice to get a little more practice. And I was SOO happy to get a visit from the Horsts! I can't believe it's been 5 months since we've seen them! Makayla's gotten so big since we saw her last :)
Earlier this year I made a cute "under the sea" themed baby blanket and burp cloths for our good friends Carolyn & Josh and their daughter Makayla. Recently, Carolyn mentioned that she'd like to have a small zippered bag for toys and books to take to and from daycare/babysitter and she'd love to have one that matched her stuff. So of course I was happy to make her one :) It was a pretty close call because I barely had ANY of the fabric left and I wasn't sure how I was going to make it work! I ended up sewing some strips of the scraps together to make the front and then using a little bit of the coral to do the same embroidered "M" on it. For the back, I was out of the blues and ocean fabrics so i used the same coral fabric on the back of this bag as the "M" and then I embroidered her name on that side. On the sides and top you can see I used the same white fabric from her quilt borders. Then I added a white zipper to keep it closed with a little ribbon for the zipper pull. When I started the bag I wasn't sure if I should make handles or what to do about that part but I happened to have some gray webbing leftover from Ryan's Lifejacket Bag and figured it would make a great strap. Plus I think having something on the ends to hold while pulling the zipper is always helpful. I ended up leaving the bag un-lined since it has a pretty nice interfacing in it to cover seams and such but if anyone has tips for making a lined bag this shape - please share!!
