First Painted Furniture

9/29/2013

Once I decided I was ready to decorate our guest room, I knew I needed a dresser to go in there.  I had a small dresser from when Ryan was younger up there but it was really the wrong shape dresser for the room - I wanted one long and low.  So I found this little guy on Craigslist - it was a little more than I would have liked to pay but I wanted one right away and this is EXACTLY what I was looking for.

GFS Marketplace

It may not be very exciting to anyone who lives in a big city but here in Melbourne, we don't get new stores all that often.  This weekend is the grand opening of a new place called Gordon Food Service (GFS) Marketplace.  Kayla and I went to go check it out and it was pretty interesting - it appears to be geared mostly towards restaurant supplies but I think some of the bulk purchases might be a good buy when I do freezer cooking.  They don't have nearly as much stuff as a Sam's or Costco but you don't have to pay for a membership!  I took some pics of some items we might buy and their prices so I could look it up later.  To all my coupon friends or people who shop at Sam's/Costco, let me know if any of the products look like a really good deal.

Fuzzy Chevron Blanket

Recently our youngest nephew Greyson had his 1st birthday, yay!  I've gotten in this tradition where for all the nieces and nephews they get a baby blanket or quilt for their first birthday and then a twin sized quilt for their big-kid bed when they turn two.  This year was a little overwhelming since I had two "big kid" quilts, my nephew's 1st bday quilt and my mom's 50th bday quilt but so far I'm getting them all done on time (go me!).

Quick Chair Recover

Ok Ok, I know I'm obsessed.  But when I start a project I like to go all the way, LOL.  So as part of finishing up the guest room, I thought I'd give this little chair a facelift to make it fit in better in the room.

Panther Pride!

For anyone who doesn't know, my husband and I both graduated from Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech) in Melbourne, FL and this year is the Inaugural Football season!  Florida Tech is NCAA Division 2 and the football team is in the Gulf South Conference (the rest of the sports are in the Sunshine State Conference but there are no other Division 2 football teams in that conference).  Anyways, their first game was two weeks ago versus Stetson and they did great!  They won 20-13, yay!  Then last weekend, we watched their first away game versus Newberry (a small school in South Carolina) and they lost 23 - 19 but they played well and it was a really fun game to watch.

Naturally we were really excited that we had tickets to last night's game (2nd home game) against West Alabama.  We knew that Florida Tech would probably lose since West Alabama is nationally ranked but we still had hopes it would be a good game.  We started the night off with some drinks at our favorite local bar The Broken Barrel Tavern and then rode their free shuttle over to the game.  Unfortunately it kind of went downhill from there since they were losing 28 - 3 at half and finished the game at 45 - 3.  Yikes!  But we stayed until the bitter end to show our school spirit and hopefully the next game will be better.  Go Panthers Football!!

Goodbye Bi-Fold Doors

9/19/2013

Most of the closets in our house have wood slat style bi-fold doors.  And I HATE them.  I don't mind the way they look but the thing that drives me nuts is that they constantly come off the tracks or get stuck or some other thing that causes them to need to be adjusted.  I swear you can only open those doors about 3 tmes before you need to readjust them.  Super annoying.  So as part of the guest room re-do it was time to get rid of the non-functioning bi-fold doors.

Painted Crate

Also while wandering around TJ Maxx I saw this little crate/box on clearance for $2.  I didn't have any use for a red crate but I could certainly use a white one.  You know where this is headed right?  Time to paint it!

Wedding Shadowboxes

Last weekend I had to go get new tires so while I was waiting, I walked down the street to TJ Maxx to walk around and I saw these awesome shadow boxes for only $14 each!  They are hinged and have magnets so you just pull it open and there is foam board inside with burlap so you can pin (or glue) whatever you want in there.  I have been trying to decide what to do with some of our wedding stuff like the invitations and such and these are perfect!  Sorry about the flash - until I get lamps set up in there it's too dark to take pics without the flash.

It Was A Crib . . . Part 4

You may remember that I bought an upholstered crib off Craigslist earlier this year and I made three projects with it already: a tool organizer, a headboard and a quilt rack.  I was also able to use a part of it to make a bulletin board!

Cathedral Window Quilt - Planning

9/9/2013

As part of redecorating the guest bedroom, I decided I wanted to make a quilt to go on the bed.  Previously there was a really heavy duvet with a gold and purple cover.  It was pretty but it was WAY to hot for Florida - even in the winter that comforter is more than you need.  Plus the fabrics were too heavy for that room, it felt like it really weighed the room down.  I started doing some pinterest and internet searching for inspiration and I saw this pillow and really liked it!
