Garden Fence Quilt - Initial Piecing

Once you have cut all the pieces, it’s time to start sewing the sashing onto the rectangles and center squares.

Center Squares
Each center square needs to have white sashing strips on all four sides of the square.  First sew a 1.5" x 4.5" strip onto two opposite sides of the square.  Sew with right sides together then open and press.  Next, sew the 1.5" x 6.5” strips onto the two remaining sides of the squares and press flat.  This quilt uses a quarter inch seam allowance for all seams.

Outer Rings Preparation
The top/bottom pieces and the left/right pieces of blue and green fabric will all get a 1.5" x 2.5" strip of sashing between them.  Sew a piece of sashing to a 2.5" x 5.5” rectangle and another piece of sashing to a 2.5" x 3" rectangle.  Press open and attach another matching rectangle of the same size to the other side of the sashing.

Repeat for all of the blue and green fabrics until you have used up all the blue/green rectangles and small strips of sashing.

To save time, I didn’t pin any of these and I lined them all up to sew in an assembly line fashion.  Here’s a quick video showing how I sew these to save as much time as possible:
When you’re done with all the center squares and the top/bottom and left/right strips for the outer ring, you will be ready to assemble the blocks.

Thank God I found you and your wonderful instructions. I'm a beginner quilter and couldn't make head nor tails of how to piece it together from the original Hyacinth Quilt Design website. Thank You!
