Garden Fence Quilt - Cutting

My last post about the Garden Fence Quilt showed the design I chose, the fabrics I chose and instructions on how much fabric to buy.  Today we’ll cut all the fabric!

I always pre-wash my fabrics so that there is no shrinking (or minimal shrinking) of the fabrics after I’ve sewn the quilt.  If you don’t pre-wash, you may end up with distortions or color bleeding when the quilt is washed.

For each individual block you will need to cut the following:
(1)  4.5" x 4.5" Square (center)
(4)  2.5" x 3" Rectangles (outer ring)
(4)  2.5" x 5.5" Rectangles (outer ring)
(4)  1.5" x 2.5" Strips of sashing fabric
(2)  1.5" x 4.5" Strips of sashing fabric (surrounding center square)
(2)  1.5" x 6.5" Strips of sashing fabric (surrounding center square)

Since I am using each color for three outer rings and three inner squares, I cut the following pieces from EACH green and blue fabric:
(3) 4.5" x 4.5" Squares (centers)
(12) 2.5" x 3.5" Rectangles (outer ring)
(12) 2.5" x 5.5" Rectangles (outer ring)

I cut the following pieces from the white sashing fabric:
(120) 1.5" x 2.5" Strips
(60)   1.5" x 4.5" Strips (surrounding center squares)
(60)   1.5" x 6.5" Strips (surrounding center squares)
(24)   1.5" x 11" Strips (sashing between each block in a row)
(5)     1.5" x 60" Strips (sashing between each row)
(4)     1.5" x 80" Strips (borders)

Grand total is 543 pieces...Phew that was a lot of pieces to cut!  If you have a rotary cutter you can zip through these quickly and easily.  I typically fold my fabric in half so I can cut through two layers at a time.  Some people cut through 3 or more layers at a time but I get nervous about the fabric shifting and it’s important to cut precisely so I stick to two layers at a time.
