The Nutcracker

12/20/2013

Like I mentioned earlier this month, Ryan's anniversary gift to me was tickets to go see The Nutcracker by the Orlando Ballet.  My mom used to take us to see it most years during Christmastime but I haven't been in a long time and I keep saying each year that we should go.  This is the first time Ryan's ever been to a ballet and it was pretty nice of him to buy tickets for us to go since I'm sure ballet isn't exactly his idea of fun, LOL.

The ballet was at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center in Orlando.  I had never been there but it seemed fairly old and worn down.  The theater was clean and it looked like they maintained it as best as they could but it's certainly aging.  I'm not sure if they have multiple stages or just one - I would assume just one since it says it holds almost 2500 people.  Their seating and stage arrangement is very good - we sat really close to the front and all the way to one side.  I've been in some theaters where if you are that close or that far to the side, you can't see anything.  But even from our seats, I didn't feel like we were straining to see or looking at the dancer's feet.

I wasn't sure if Ryan knew there wouldn't be any dialog so I was interested to hear what he thought of it.  The first act has more action - with the Christmas gifts, the life-size dolls, and of course, the battle of the toy soldiers versus the mice and rat king.  The second act has less plot but more dancing and more of the music most people are familiar with.  I like the 2nd act first with all the dances by the sugar plum fairy and her guests but I thought Ryan would like the 1st part better since more happens...I was wrong, he liked the familiar music best :)

I really meant to ask someone to take a picture of us and I totally forgot.  Now I'm bummed that we didn't get a pic of the two of us on our first anniversary date **sigh**.  Oh well.

Anyways, the ballet was really good and we had fun together.  If you like the story of the Nutcracker, I'd definitely recommend going.  And if you don't have a lot to spend, don't worry, you'll still be able to see fine no matter what tickets you get!

Happy 1st Anniversary to us!!
