Kitchen Reorganization

3/12/2012

I can't believe i haven't blogged in a week! Yikes, sorry guys!  I was having trouble with my card-reader when i started the post below but I found a cable to use it with the computer instead of the card reader so I'll try to catch you guys up :)

As I mentioned before, I did a small kitchen reorganization over the weekend (last weekend while Ryan was on his cruise).  It was one of those moments where everything was jammed into drawers and cabinets and every time I tried to get something out, everything would fall out.  So I finally went to Bed Bath & Beyond and picked up a few things.  Unfortunately I didn't do the whole kitchen but this was a good start (and the areas that were the worst).  Here's what the cabinet and drawer looked like before:

What a mess right?  So i ran out to Bed Bath and Beyond and I think I made a significant improvement.  I moved all the utensils out of the "junk drawer" and used a belt and tie rack to hang them all on the backsplash.  Then I moved the spices off the countertop and into the drawer.  Not only did this get them out of direct sunlight (to improve their quality and life span) but it allowed me to move my extra spices out of the pantry so that ALL of my spices are together now.

I also got a cool new knife block where there aren't actual slots for the knives so it holds a lot more knives (before I had some in a knife block and some in that "junk drawer").  Last but not least, I got some racks to hold all my baking pans vertically so that i can actually reach in and remove one pan to use without having to take out every single pan.

Whew that's so much better!  Next up for re-organization will be my baking cabinet (has all my flour, sugar, etc.) and the pantry.  Our kitchen isn't tiny but I have a ton of stuff so it needs to be organized if it's going to hold everything.  Update from this week: the Command hooks I used to hold up the belt and tie racks with all my whisks, serving spoons, etc were only rated for 3lb and apparently that wasn't enough because one of them eventually fell so i need to go buy two hooks that can hold at least 5lb.
