Thursday, we left work a little early and headed to Orlando to the airport to catch our flight. We were running a little late so we were worried we might miss it but then when we got there the flight ended up being delayed for an hour. Normally I would have been glad that it got delayed a little so we didn't have to rush through security...but we had a connection in Houston and our total layover was only an hour. So as we took off from Orlando it seemed pretty unlikely that we would be able to make our flight. But the pilots made up some of the time in the air and we landed at 8:30pm for our 9:05pm flight. We were prepared to make a run for it when Ryan looked online to see what gate it was leaving from when he found out they had cancelled the flight instead!
We got off the plane and went to the service desk and got seats on a flight in the morning but we wanted to find out if we could get a rental car instead because we were going to lose half a day of our trip waiting for the next day's flight and we only needed to go from Houston to Dallas which is about 3.5 hours driving. The lady at the service desk told us that National car rental doesn't have a drop off fee for dropping off at another airport so they should be able to do that. She kept our seats on the next day's flight (just in case) and then we were supposed to call her if we needed to cancel. We headed to the rental car center which was about 15mins away on the shuttle and then waited in line at the rental car place only to find out that to rent a car for less than 12 total hours and drop it off at Dallas would be $190!!! Since United wasn't going to pay for it (they don't offer vouchers for rental cars), that was too much for us. If it was under $100 we would have considered it but $200 was just way too much. Unfortunately United hadn't given us the rental car vouchers yet so we had to go back to the airport and stand in line again. We waited in line for the United Service desk for over 2 hours! It was so frustrating and there were so many people there who had gotten stuck because of mechanical issues or delayed flights made them miss their connection.
By the time we actually got the vouchers and then got on the shuttle (another 45min wait) and to the hotel to check in, we got to our hotel room at 1:30am (we landed at 8:30pm remember?). It was pretty exhausting. Fortunately on Friday everything went pretty smoothly. Although apparently I had a butter knife (from our home silverware) in my bag - I must have brought it to work one day with my lunch or something. I didn't know about it and we made it through security in Orlando thurs night and Houston Thurs night but friday morning they saw it, LOL. So now our silverware is one knife short of a full set, LOL. Our flight still got delayed a bit but we FINALLY made it to dallas around lunch time.
Friday night we had a little birthday party for me and my stepbrother. It was pretty fun - just a bunch of family hanging out. There was my dad, stepmom, brother, Ryan, my grandmother, my uncle and another aunt. They cooked up some delicious steaks and twice baked potatoes - I ate so much I thought I was going to make myself sick, LOL.
And now here we are, it's my 27th birthday...happy bday to me! Hard to believe that one year ago, Ryan was getting ready to propose to me! I asked him this morning, "So is today a little less stressful for you than my last birthday was?" and he says "Hm. What did we do last year for your birthday?". I said "um...you proposed?" LOL he forgot. He cracks me up. For today i think we will mostly be just hanging out with the family and then later tonight we're going to have a little party to celebrate my brother's Confirmation. I think my college roommate Gwen is going to come over and I can't wait to see her! Her bday is the day before mine so we always celebrated together :)
