Greyson's Gator Quilt Pt 1 - HST's

3/6/2015

When my first niece was born, my sister in law asked if I would make a bed spread for her when she was ready to move into her "big girl bed".  So we decided that would be a 2nd birthday gift.  Well then my next nieces Emma and Addi were born and I made one for each of them.  And then our next nephew Greyson (our oldest nephew kind of got jipped since I wasn't quilting yet when he turned two so he'll get one eventually too).  Greyson turned two in September but I knew I wasn't going to get it done in time.  So we bought him a normal birthday present and I said it would be his Christmas gift.  Obviously I'm a little behind since it's March and not done yet but anyways...

For Aubrey and Addi, Melissa wanted to keep the same overall quilt pattern but change up the fabrics and designs.  It really is amazing how different the same pattern can look just by using different fabrics.  For Greyson's quilt, I was originally thinking about using some really cute zoo fabric by Riley Blake.  But Greyson's dad made a specific request on this one...University of Florida Gators :)  Hmm...how to make a quilt that is trendy enough that Mel will like it, has enough UF spirit for Greg and is a design that Greyson won't grow out of it as he gets older.  Here's what I came up with...

It is the same overall pattern as the girls except I will have to sew a bunch of Half Square Triangles (HST's) to make the chevron look.  I thought about using UF fabric for the chevrons but I didn't want it to get too busy.  I think I'll use the licensed fabric on the back of the quilt instead.  How am I going to sew that big gators logo?  That's a good question, I'll let you know when I figure it out lol.

Back to the story, here's all my fabrics ready to go!  I found a neat tutorial online to make the HST's a little faster.  I cut my fabric into larger squares and then marked an "x" on each square for sewing purposes.

The lines drawn are actually the cutting lines, not the sewing lines.  Match each orange square to a white one and sew a line 1/4" away from the drawn lines and on each side of the drawn lines.  Repeat for the blue and white squares too.  Once they are all sewn, cut along the drawn lines and then also cut each triangle in half as shown.

Press them open and see your half square triangles!

Each of these blocks needs to be pressed open and trimmed to the final size (they should be close but need to be trimmed to be precise/exact).  Oh boy that's a lot of blocks, what did I get myself into? LOL.
