Things Dashing Dish Does Really Well
- Variety: there are quite a few different flavors and types of recipes, there should be something for every palate
- Taste: Each recipe we have made has been either “pretty good” or “fantastic!”
- Time to Prepare: Most of the meals can be made with 15 minutes or less of prep work
- Nutrition: Most of these meals are low calorie and either balanced nutrients or low-carb, great for anyone looking to eat healthier
- Similar Ingredients: Even though the flavor profiles vary greatly, many of the meals can be made from the same common ingredients (chicken, turkey, squash/zucchini, peppers/onions, shredded cheese, greek yogurt and cottage cheese seem to all be VERY common)
- Adaptability: I have made minor changes or substitutions to some of the recipes based on what I had on hand or something that one of us wouldn’t want to eat…and they still came out great. It’s nice having recipes that are flexible
- New Recipes: Recipes are added often enough to keep me interested and give me something new, but not so often that the amount of recipes offered is overwhelming to even look at
- Substitutions: She often suggests things that can be substituted to reduce calories (like using PB2 instead of peanut butter) or things people may not have or want to use (like honey instead of stevia) and she gives the amount you should use instead
Things Dashing Dish Could Improve On
- Recipe Layout: The blog format is nice to read through and the pictures are very pretty. But without a consolidated recipe card at the bottom, I find myself scrolling back and forth from the ingredients to the instructions and back
- Dairy Free Recipes: This one doesn’t bother me, but if you are lactose intolerant this site may not be for you – cheese or yogurt are a key ingredient in many of the recipes
- Organizing Favorite Recipes: Right now you can’t sort or categorize the favorites so if you have a lot you’ll have to scroll through them all. It would be nice if they were at least separated by category. Additionally, it would REALLY great if when you are logged in, you could see from the recipe preview whether you had already marked it as a favorite. Sometimes I see a recipe and can’t remember if I’ve made it or not until I open it and see if it is a favorite (similarly it might not be a bad idea to have an option to make a private dislike or hide option in case there is a recipe you didn’t)
- Preparation Time: If the recipe requires time for marinating, that is not included in the preparation time so sometimes I find myself having to make it a different night or push dinner later
- Ingredient Amounts: Some of the recipes call for “1 cup of chicken” or another similar volume measurement. For anyone monitoring their calories, you know that is a very inaccurate way to measure your food (is it a packed cup? Is it shredded or chopped first?) and it makes it harder to figure out how much to buy. Plus, what size is a “medium pepper”? consequently I weigh my foods and double check the nutrition facts if a meal is close to my max calories
Overall I’m really happy with my Dashing Dish membership so far and I can’t wait to keep trying new recipes. Here are some of the different recipes I’ve made and we’ve enjoyed so far (these are what I based my reviews on):
